Singer Sarah Brightman to Make 'Groundbreaking' Space Travel Announcement

Famed soprano singer Sarah Brightman will make a 'groundbreaking announcement' about space travel next month, according to the U.S. space tourism company Space Adventures.

Brightman will hold a press conference in Moscow Oct. 10 at 4:00 p.m. Moscow time (8:00 a.m. EDT). She will appear with UNESCO Artist for Peace Mikhail Gendelev and Eric Anderson, chairman of the Virginia-based firm Space Adventures.

Space Adventures has brokered deals to send seven private citizens aboard Russian spacecraft to the International Space Station. These space tourists typically train extensively in Russia before their trips, and spend about two weeks in Earth orbit. Their ticket prices have ranged from about $20 million for the first traveler, American investor Dennis Tito, in 2001, to $35 million for the most recent space tourist, Canadian circus-founder Guy Laliberte, in 2009.

There is no word yet on whether Brightman herself will become the next private space traveler, or if her collaboration with Space Adventures involves some other project altogether.

Available seats on Russian Soyuz spacecraft have been scarce lately, as that vehicle is the only transportation for astronauts to the space station in the wake of last year's retirement of NASA's space shuttles.

However, a source within the Russian space agency told state news agency Interfax that seats may open up to space tourists on flights in 2015 when professional astronauts and cosmonauts start serving year-long tours of duty aboard the station.

Brightman, a native of England, is "the world's biggest selling soprano," according to Space Adventures, and sings with a vocal range spanning three octaves. She has topped both the Billboard dance and classical music charts, and performs around the world.

"Sarah's work transcends any specific musical genre, synthesizing many influences and inspirations into a unique sound and vision," according to a Space Adventures statement. "She remains among the world?s most prominent performers, with global sales of 30 million units having received more than 180 gold and platinum awards in over 40 countries."

This year, Brightman is serving as a UNESCO "Artist For Peace" Ambassador, and is working on a new record to be released in late 2012.

Home with my family on Sunday...

Hiking, biking, walking, swimming, skating, hula-hooping, frisbee, flying kites, sidewalk chalk art, crouquet, or soccer.

Go to a park near your home. Or a museum. Or an art gallery. Play board games. Go enjoy the fall colors in nature. Take pictures. Heck, paint a picture of it if you're so inclined.

The possibilities are endless. Just pick a few and do them.

See a crescent moon in a Martian sky

NASA / JPL-Caltech / MSSS

The Martian moon Phobos shines faintly in a dusky sky, as seen by NASA's Curiosity rover.

By Alan Boyle

A fresh picture from NASA's Curiosity rover shows the Martian moon Phobos as it's never been seen before?? as a crescent shining over the Red Planet at dusk.

The image was captured by the rover's Mastcam imaging system last Friday, on the 45th Martian day of Curiosity's mission. You have to look closely to make out the faint, somewhat irregular crescent in the frame ? just as you sometimes have to look closely to see our own moon's ghostly crescent in Earth's daytime skies.

We've seen other views of Phobos, the larger of Mars' two moons. But those mostly show the moon as seen by Red Planet orbiters, or as a silhouette during an eclipse. This is a rare photo (perhaps the first?) showing a crescent moon in a daylit Martian sky, as seen from the surface. It's the sort of spectacle that settlers could look forward to at sunset, decades from now.

The Planetary Society's Emily Lakdawalla provides further detail in her blog posting, plus further reflection:?"Think about this for a moment ? we're seeing a different moon from the surface of a different world. And this moon is weird not just for its lumpiness, but also because it orbits so close to Mars that it outpaces Mars' rotation. That means it rises in the west and sets in the east, more than twice every Martian day. Completely alien. And awesome, in the literal sense of the world."

More awesomeness may be on the way on Thursday, when NASA has scheduled a televised news conference about the latest scientific findings from the $2.5 billion Curiosity mission. There are already reports that the rover has detected concrete-like material that hints at the past presence of water. That meshes with Curiosity's mission to trace the geological history of the Red Planet, and look for chemical evidence that Mars was once potentially habitable.

What else will we find out? Stay tuned for Thursday's update. In the meantime, check out the pictures that are flooding through NASA's Mars Science Laboratory website and the MSL forum at UnmannedSpaceflight.com.

Here are a couple of nice panoramas from Ken Kremer and Marco Di Lorenzo. One image is based on colorized imagery from Sol 29 (Sept. 4), and highlights the instrument-equipped turret on the rover's robotic arm. The black-and-white photo was assembled from data collected on Sol 44-47 (Sept. 20-23). In that 360-degree photo, the rock known as Jake Matijevic is just right of center stage. An inset photo shows Curiosity placing its robotic-arm turret on the rock.

A 360-degree panorama, stitched together from Curiosity images, shows the rover and its surroundings in the Sept. 20-23 time frame. Curiosity conducted its first contact-science experiments on a rock designated Jake Matijevic, which was named after a recently deceased member of the rover team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The overall panorama shows the rock named Jake just right of center, and an inset photograph shows the rover's instrument turret examining the rock. Prominent Kremlin critic faces criminal charges

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russia's top investigative agency says it has filed criminal charges against a Russian tycoon whose holdings include a newspaper critical of the Kremlin.

The State Investigative Committee said Wednesday that it charged Alexander Lebedev with hooliganism and assault over a TV shown incident in which he punched another businessman.

Alexander Lebedev, whose net worth was reported by Forbes magazine to be $1.1 billion, made his money in the banking industry and owns a stake in Russian flag carrier Aeroflot as well as his own Red Wings airline. He has financed Novaya Gazeta, which is fiercely critical of the Kremlin, and two British newspapers ? the Independent and the Evening Standard.

Lebedev said last month that he was forced to sell his assets because of pressure by the Russian security agency.

The 18 Commandments of Avoiding Spam Filters? | Business 2 ...

Easy Email Marketing Tips

how to avoid getting trapped by a spam filterTurns out, all those invitations to help a Nigerian Prince transfer some cash are no joke. As of August 2012, fighting email spam cost American consumers and corporations about $20 billion annually.?Filters on major email platforms are continually becoming more effective at keeping every unsolicited offer for diet pills out of our personal inboxes. In fact, they?re so effective that marketing messages your contacts might not end up in the inbox if they include the word ?free!? Every small business owner and inbound marketer needs to know at least the basics of how to avoid getting caught by a spam filter:

1.?Don?t Buy Email Lists

While purchasing lists of names and emails who?ve agreed to receive commercial offers isn?t technically illegal, it?s not an especially prudent move. Since the senders never really opted into your communications, your open rate, click-throughs and sender score are likely to plummet.

2.?DON?T WRITE LIKE THIS!!!!!

Being aggressive is much more likely to annoy your contacts than increase your open rate. Not only are aggressive tactics contrary to a smart inbound marketing strategy, spam filters don?t like them, either.

3.?Don?t Forget Alt Text

You should anticipate that not all of your contacts will be able to view the carefully-selected images you?re including in the emails and write thoughtful descriptions that support the overall message.

4. Do?Avoid Trigger Words

Free and it?s common variations, no obligation and guarantee can all be viewed suspiciously by spam filters, whether they?re used in the subject line of the email or in the body.

5.?Do Spell Check

Errors in your content aren?t just embarrassing and sure to be pointed out by someone on your contacts list, they?re a touchy point for many platforms. Misspellings of common words will be viewed with caution and the message might not end up in the recipients? inboxes.

6.?Don?t Utilize SEO

Yes, we?ve heard the breaking news that personal emails from your Gmail account are going to start showing up in Google search results. That doesn?t mean you should revert to keyword stuffing, using a font that matches the background or other black hat SEO practices. If the copy doesn?t make sense to a human, it could hurt your sender score.

7. Do Remove Invalid Emails

Make a point or removing all hard bounces as soon as possible, defined as attempted deliveries that have failed permanently. An abandoned or closed email account offers no contribution to your bottom line, and a high failure rate can damage your sender score.

8.?Don?t Use Attachments

Even if you?re feeling charitable enough to share your latest whitepaper or eBook with a certain segment of your email list, don?t bite. Put a prominently-placed call-to-action in your emails, and direct your contacts back to your website to take advantage of the offer.

9.?Do Offer Unsubscribes

Have some of your contacts been awfully quiet lately? Have they been ignoring your awesome invitations to sales, savings opportunities and brand-new eBooks? Offer them an opportunity to make a clean break and leave your email list. Remember, it?s always better to lose subscribers than risk being marked as spam.

10.?Don?t Forget to Confirm Opt-Ins.

The harder your subscribers have to work to receive your exclusive communications, the more likely they are to want to read your content. After you receive a new email address, ask the new subscriber to confirm their interest. Sure, it may decrease your list growth slightly, but you?re almost guaranteed to have better engagement.

11.?Just Ask to Be Added

Even if you?re far from a spammer, you could still end up in a spam folder. It?s a sad truth for email marketers that spam filters are more effective than ever. Just ask your contacts to add your email to their contacts list.

12. Don?t Make Unsubscribing Difficult

Don?t obscure the unsubscribe link or require your contacts to complete a long survey or form before removing their email addresses.

13.?Use a Real Name

Marketing people enjoy is often personal and more human than corporate. Add some personality and trust to your communications by sending under the name of a real employee, whether it?s your CEO or Graphic Designer.

14.?Don?t Be Too Long-Winded

Experts estimate that 400 words is probably ideal for email marketing communications. Keep it short and sweet enough that your call-to-action is above the fold. Besides, extensive copy can also be a trigger for spam filters.

15.?Do Experiment

Before you do a mass-mailing, send emails to common email platforms to ensure nothing is lost in translation. Email spam filters can have varying levels of sensitivity, and you may need to make some tweaks before sending to an entire segment.

16.?Do Check Your Sender Score

83% of the time an email doesn?t reach an inbox, it?s caused by a poor sender score. Learn how to interpret your score and register with ReturnPath to check it on a regular basis.

17.?Do Remove Unsubscribed Contacts

Complying with requests to unsubscribe from your communications isn?t just a smart move, it?s the law!

18.?Don?t Stop Learning!

The laws and technology surrounding email marketing are continually changing, and there?s just no excuse to stop learning how to avoid tripping spam filters or worse, breaking the law. We recommend expert blog The Email Skinny as a reputable resource for your RSS feeds.

Better SDKs = Wall Street Shutting The Fuck Up: Facebook?s Mobile Platform Monetization Equation

Facebook iOS SDK.05 PM copyFacebook has just released the?Facebook SDK 3.1 for iOS?which lets app developers on its platform to take advantage of single sign-on through native login and other features from the social network getting baked into iOS 6. The new SDK lets app developers prep their Facebook mobile apps for iPhone 5's screen size, native sharing "sheets", ready-to-use UI elements, and a new ad analytics beta. Native login is big because it lets third-party apps avoid having to ask for a user's Facebook email and password. If Facebook can give mobile developers the best possible tools to build on its platform, the ecosystem of apps that send it content will thrive and Facebook will be able to monetize that in-feed content with mobile ads.

President Obama over the last four years has had as successful a record on Latin America as the last two presidents before him. It can be argued he has had some added success in the region considering luck and policy with Colombia gaining a handle on its own internal conflict and Cuba slowly reforming to a more open society. [Venezuelan President Hugo] Chavez and his mission to continue his fight to free his people from American colonialism is slowing due to his personal health, something that may calm anti-Chavez activists in the US and Venezuela if they can wrestle away his popular support in the upcoming election. Mexico unfortunately has been mired in violence since the Bush Administration and new initiatives may come into effect as legalizing narcotics and devaluing drugs may be the only way to deflate drug violence in the country, a policy change that will have a massive effect on the next presidential term or the next president.

Mitt Romney has published his Latin American policy goals online at Mittromney.com and can be found here. After a week of publicity focusing on the beginning of the Arab Winter, Romney has fallen off the media map while President Obama spends his time focusing on the Middle East. To throw some attention towards Mitt and away from the Arab world, I will discuss some of his policy initiatives below.

Romney starts out with a criticism on Obama?s last four years in office, but much of the attacks he takes on Obama were issues that preceded Obama and were issues that were not addressed during the Bush years. Many problems, like those of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Colombia, were issues that were frozen in Congress for many years as Democrats and Republicans and their varied interest groups used the Colombia issue to freeze progress on an FTA. In reality, progress on FTAs in the region stopped after 9/11 and current FTAs like NAFTA became less strict as the US economy faded and US trade policy started to lose benefits it formally enshrined in many of its FTAs with two wars and a large trade deficit owed mostly to China. Early in its first term, the Bush Administration was negotiating the FTAA, the Free Trade Agreement of the Americas in 2001. After 9/11 all focus turned to the Middle East, and despite the ability for FTAs to be continued over the next eight years under Bush, no significant policy moves were made to engage and progress trade with Latin America. Romney?s main argument seems to be that under Romney?s Republicans, he would push through more lucrative FTAs, but neither Obama nor the Republicans did much over the last 12 years to push through these FTAs, and despite the delays in the US-Colombia agreement, it was finally done under Obama.

Romney continues in his commentary to speak about Honduras and Cuba and errors Obama has made in handling both issues. Firstly, to speak on Honduras, while it is a valid point of view to make, a lot of the support Obama had for [former President Manuel] Zelaya was more of a lack of attention to the issue rather than strongly supporting Mr. Zelaya. In addition, it is doubtful Obama will lose many votes over Honduras. The opposite effect may take shape, as to focus on Zelaya and Obama likely would make Romney look like he has little to criticize as opposed to gaining any support against Obama in this regard. While an opening of Cuba has more to do with internal Cuban decisions than any one US policy move, pushing US policy on Cuba in some cases may cause more damage than produce any results. Support for embargoes and visa restrictions has done little since the 1960s and interest in punishing Cuba has faded. While China slowly succeeds to become America?s largest trading partner, it is difficult for American politicians to criticize Cuba for something their largest future trading partner does on a regular basis.

In Romney?s details on his own policy plan on the region, he makes strong points on how he will re-engage with Latin America on democracy and trade. I do not know whether Obama will do the same, but for the US it would always be a positive approach to engage and stay engaged with Latin America. Two issues that are not addressed come apparent however. The issue of Iran and Hezbollah in Latin America are of great concern and are mentioned quite a few times in his policy outline, but for those in the region it may show a continued focus on the Middle East as opposed to creating stronger ties in Latin America. There is no mention of issues that may concern Latinos in the US or Latin Americans, issues of immigration are never mentioned at all and it is a mistake to think that those in Latin America do not pay attention to those issues. It is more likely that immigration is at the top of their list of concerns, and likely that Iran is at the bottom. The real challenge in the region is one of America?s economic rival in Latin America, China, and with no mention on how US investment may compete or displace Chinese investment it seems that there is no effective future investment plan for Latin America. While he does mention Mexico briefly, he should have placed more focus on NAFTA and strong ties in the region. He completely leaves out any reference to trade and policy development with Brazil, and almost entirely ignores any positive relationships the US already have in the region.

Without much focus on Mexican immigration or its healthy economy, Mexico is mentioned at the end as almost a sole security issue. While deaths in Mexico do complete with those in Iraq and Afghanistan combined, he leaves out any economic discussion on Mexico and speaks on security issues without suggesting how they might handle future policy changes in the region. It is certain that new policy approaches will come from Latin America as Mexico and possibly Venezuela change direction with new governments. Future issues like?legalization?of narcotics or any alternative policy approaches apart from military options are not broached in Romney?s Latin America policy platform. While Romney offers little differentiation from Obama, it is expected that a more clear and logical and historically significant policy statement should be issued for his campaign. If he is not Bush, and not Obama, it still seems that he has yet to show he is different and how a?Romney Administration will be?different on Latin America.

Ness Dining Guide (for iPhone)

Burned out on the predictable recommendations from Yelp, Foursquare, Recco, and other socially driven dining apps? Ness Dining Guide (free) makes a solid go at recommending eateries it thinks you'll like based on your prior experiences, as well as data from a number of social networks. It culls information from not just your friends and preferences, but several social networks more generally, looking for chatter on Twitter, Facebook Places check-ins, reviews on Citysearch, and more to determine when a restaurant or bar is happening.

Design and Interface
Ness has good looks on its side, with a very pretty interface full of gorgeous backdrop photos of brightly colored sushi rolls, mile-high pies, darling espresso cup sets, and more. On most screens, these photos fill the screen with buttons and text entry fields layered on top with semi-transparent windows to keep all that delicious food in sight.

The opening screen uses the background images to show different types of restaurants that it can recommend, such as Asian, Middle Eastern, bakery, and brewery. Six options appear on screen, with more available as you swipe right-to-left. A search box sits in the center if you choose to type instead.

Searching with typed text can be simple or complex. You might enter a type of cuisine, signature food served (like pizza, burgers, ice cream), or name of a restaurant. Or you can add more filters, such as distance from your current location and price range. One great set of filters is called "hide," which lets you suppress restaurants that are "closed now," "rated" if don't want to go to a place you've been (and therefore rated on Ness) before, and "big chains" to make sure Micky Dee's doesn't crop up in the results.

Functionality and Recommendations
Ness prompts you to rate at least a few businesses before you really dive into the app so that it can better guess what you'll like. In fact, it shows you right on screen how many more four-and five-star ratings it wants you to give before it's fairly certain it can do a good job. To give it some basis, I searched for restaurants in the neighborhoods where I've lived and worked, as well as places I tend to eat out most.

As I'm in New York City, the selection of restaurants can be daunting, even after you drill down to a specific neighborhood. In looking, for example, in my old stomping ground of Astoria, I recognized a lot of delis and take-out restaurants in Ness, but didn't see my favorite pizzeria, a new ramen shop that's more than decent, or a specialty grilled cheese and beer restaurant that has gotten a lot of well deserved buzz in the two-and-a-half years since it opened. I noticed the same pattern of well-known (and well-respected) restaurants not showing up in other neighborhoods, like midtown east and Williamsburg, Brooklyn, too.

It's also difficult to go back or undo an action if you make an error. For example, when you rate restaurants from a list, giving it anywhere from one to five stars, it then disappears from the list instantly. A few times, my clumsy fingers hit the wrong number of stars, and I cursed when I realized I couldn't easily change it. (You can go through a preferences section to make changes to existing reviews, but that involves finding it from the main navigation bar, opening the correct area, and swiping through what could be a very long list of rated restaurants.)

Considering I didn't find some of my favorite restaurants auto-populating Ness' lists by area, I was pleasantly surprised when it came time to get some recommendations. Ness guessed my taste in coffee shops fairly accurately, suggesting I'd more than "like" a few coffee houses that I regularly visit.

Ness actually generates a percent score for how much it thinks you'll enjoy a restaurant. A lot of my scores keep hitting the 62 to 71 percent range (which amounts to "like but not love"), and I have yet to see Ness confidently declare that I'll love a place. But on the whole, the recommendations fit my tastes.

Socially Enhanced
Ness hooks into a lot of other social networks. You can connect with Foursquare and Facebook accounts to see what's going on among your friends' dining activities, but the app pulls in other valuable crowd-sourced information, too.

For example, you can look up the "popularity" of, say, a doughnut shop ("#1 in Greenpoint!"), which considers the number of people talking about it on Facebook and Twitter, as well as check-ins to the business via Foursquare and Facebook Places, and reviews on Citysearch. The variety of information going into the popularity rankings seems to do the results some good. When you only consider one selected social network for popularity, you can get some pretty predictable results. Ness' analyze a very good range of people, tastes, and opinions.

My favorite section of the app is for photos, which come from Instagram rather than a food-specific social network. Instagram photos, super-saturated or washed out as they may be, tend to look better than photos on Yelp, Facebook, or Foursquare. The photos show a lot of lovely food and some random faces that sometimes give you an even better sense of an undiscovered diner and its clientele.

Dine With Ness
Food-focused people should download Ness and explore its recommendations, especially when dining out in a large city that has a plethora of neighborhoods and eating options. I like that Ness' recommendations don't rely solely on information from its users, instead raking in recommendations, photos, and mentions from a variety of sites.

PHILADELPHIA A new research model has estimated that the difference in prostate cancer mortality among men with low-risk disease who choose active surveillance versus those who choose immediate treatment with radical prostatectomy is likely to be very modest, possibly as little as two to three months.

The model, developed by biostatistician Ruth Etzioni, Ph.D., and colleagues of the Public Health Sciences Division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Wash., is among the first to use specific data from published studies to project the likelihood of prostate cancer mortality among men with low-risk disease who choose active surveillance. The study was published in Clinical Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

"We are now diagnosing many more men with low-risk prostate cancer, a large fraction of whom would never have known they had disease in the absence of screening," Etzioni said. "These men have cancers that may not have caused them harm if they had not been detected through screening, and we are faced with the dilemma that not all of these men will benefit from treatment."

The alternative to treatment, known as watchful waiting or active surveillance, was backed by the National Institutes of Health as a viable option during a State-of-the-Science Consensus in December 2011. However, the approach is supported by little data due to the length of time required to measure its effect on prostate cancer mortality.

In this study, Etzioni and colleagues developed a simulation model to estimate prostate cancer mortality in men who would undergo active surveillance and compared that with the mortality of men treated with immediate radical prostatectomy. Using data from separate patient groups, they populated their model with time from diagnosis to treatment for men undergoing active surveillance, time from surgery to recurrence for men undergoing radical prostatectomy and time from recurrence after prostatectomy to death.

The model projected that 2.8 percent of men who undergo active surveillance would die from their disease within 20 years of their diagnosis compared with 1.6 percent of men who undergo immediate prostatectomy. The reduced risk for prostate cancer mortality by undergoing immediate radical prostatectomy amounted to an average of 1.8 months of additional life per patient. In comparison, those men who chose active surveillance would have an average of 6.4 years of life free from treatment and its side effects.

"Although this is not a new result, it is confirmation of what we expected and it substantiates data from previous studies looking at watchful waiting," Etzioni said. "Very few men with low-risk disease die from prostate cancer regardless, and the difference between treatments appears to be very modest."

It will be important to begin to measure quality of life between these two groups. Although immediate treatment is associated with both short-term and long-term side effects, including impotence and incontinence, active surveillance might also have an effect on a patient's quality of life.

"That six-year treatment-free interval means that men who choose active surveillance will not have to endure treatment side effects during that time, but whether that is replaced by a negative impact on quality of life because of anxiety or repeat biopsies is not well known," Etzioni said.

WHY IT MATTERS: Debt

The issue:

A sea of red ink is confronting the nation and presidents to come.

The budget deficit ? the shortfall created when the government spends more in a given year than it collects in taxes and fees? is on track to top $1 trillion for the fourth straight year. When there's not enough to pay current bills, the government borrows, mostly by selling interest-bearing Treasury bonds, bills and notes to investors and governments worldwide. It now borrows about 40 cents for every dollar it spends.

The national debt refers to the total amount the federal government owes; the deficit is just a one-year slice.

The U.S. has been borrowing since the 1700s, when it needed money to finance the American Revolution. The outstanding debt has since risen to a shade over $16 trillion. While there's plenty of finger-pointing by politicians over who's to blame, deficits historically surge during wars and deep recessions, and the U.S. has had both over the past decade.

___

Where they stand:

President Barack Obama has proposed bringing deficits down by slowing spending gradually, to avoid suddenly tipping the economy back into recession. To help, he would raise taxes on households earning over $250,000 annually and impose a surcharge of 30 percent on those making over $1 million.

He acknowledges his spending on recession-fighting stimulus, tax relief and bailout programs ? much of it started under former President George W. Bush ? has contributed to the deficit. But so have bipartisan agreements to extend Bush-era tax cuts, and paying for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Also raising deficits: a falloff in tax revenues as more people found themselves out of work and personal and corporate incomes sagged in the deepest downturn since the Great Depression.

Republican candidate Mitt Romney would lower deficits mostly through deep spending cuts, including some of the reductions proposed by his conservative running mate Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, chairman of the House Budget Committee. But many of the cuts they're pushing would be partially negated by their proposals to lower top tax rates on both corporations and individuals.

___

Why it matters:

Deficits and debt are important because it's never good to spend more than you make for too long. The party out of power always makes deficits a big issue against the one holding the White House ? as Democrats did in 2008 and Republicans are doing now.

Leaders of both parties agree the burden will become unsustainable if borrowing is not reined in while interest obligations keep rising. But huge policy differences exist over how to balance the budget or at least trim deficits to manageable levels ? whether through spending cuts, tax increases or a mix.

Obama and Democrats tend to favor a combination, while Republicans mostly want just spending cuts, although Romney and Ryan say they'd also end some tax deductions and close loopholes ? without specifying which ones.

Congress sets a ceiling on how much the government can borrow. If this debt limit is breached, the government will default on its obligations. This has never happened, but it almost did last summer in a Capitol Hill standoff. As a consequence, the nation's credit rating was downgraded for the first time ever.

The current $16.4 trillion debt limit will be reached late this year or early next. A slew of tax breaks will expire at the same time.

No matter who wins, he'll immediately have his hands full.

Week-old giant panda cub born at the National Zoo dies

Jessie Cohen/AFP - Getty Images file

Mei Xiang, the mother of the baby panda who died Sunday.

By Associated Press

The giant panda cub born a week ago at the National Zoo in Washington has died, and it was not immediately known why the animal died, zoo officials said Sunday.?

Zoo officials said in a press release that the cub was found dead Sunday morning after panda keepers heard sounds of distress from its mother, Mei Xiang.

Staffers were able to retrieve the cub about an hour later. The cub appeared to be in good condition, and there were no outward signs of trauma or infection.

The cub had been a surprise at the zoo. Fourteen-year-old Mei Xiang had five failed pregnancies before giving birth, and only one panda cub has survived at the zoo in the past.

Panda cubs are born about the size of a stick of butter and are delicate infants. Panda mothers are about 1,000 times heavier than their cubs, which are born with their eyes closed. The delicate cubs have died in the past when accidentally crushed by mom. That happened in two different zoos in China in 2009 and 2010 when mothers killed their young while attempting to nurse.

The zoo's first panda couple, Ling Ling and Hsing Hsing, arrived from China in 1972 and had five cubs during the 1980s, but none lived more than a few days. One of the cubs was stillborn, two others died of pneumonia within a day, another died from lack of oxygen after birth, and the final cub died of an infection after four days.

Panda experts have said the first weeks of life are critical for the panda cubs as mothers have to make sure they stay warm and get enough to eat.

"It's kind of a nerve-racking period for the folks that are monitoring mom and cub," Rebecca Snyder, the curator of mammals at Atlanta's zoo, said last week. Atlanta is one of only two other American zoos to have had cubs.

Atlanta has had three cubs, and the San Diego zoo has had six, including a cub born this year. A panda couple in Memphis has yet to have a cub, despite several tries. No other U.S. zoos have pandas.

The cub had not yet been named in accordance with Chinese tradition ? it was to receive a name after 100 days on Dec. 24. Had the cub survived until then, it would have been roughly the size of a loaf of bread and weighed around 10 pounds.

National Zoo Director Dennis Kelly tells reporters that the death of a giant panda cub, 'is devastating for all of us here."

U.S. bans 20 Iran officials from travel to U.N. assembly: report

DUBAI (Reuters) - The United States has denied visas to about 20 Iranian government officials hoping to attend next week's U.N. General Assembly, including two ministers, Iran's Fars news agency reported on Saturday.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, a regular at the assembly since he took office in 2005, will give his final speech there on Wednesday and will address a meeting on the "rule of law" on Monday.

But of the 160-or-so visas requested by the Iranian delegation two months ago, about 20 were turned down, Fars said.

It gave no reason, but many Iranian officials are subject to travel bans under sanctions related to Iran's nuclear program.

In Washington, the U.S. State Department had no immediate comment on the matter.

Fars did not name the two ministers who were denied visas and said Ahmadinejad would be accompanied by his chief of staff Esfandiar Rahim Mashaie and Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi.

Fars named two of those banned from going to New York as members of Ahmadinejad's staff: Mohammad Shaikhan, in charge of communications and information, and Mohammad Jafar Behdad, in charge of political affairs.

Ahmadinejad, whose second and final term in office ends next year, has used previous U.N. speeches to defend a nuclear program he insists is peaceful and to make verbal attacks on Israel, the United States and Europe.

He has questioned the historical truth of the Holocaust and cast doubt on whether Islamist hijackers were really responsible for the attacks of September 11, 2001.

Most Western envoys walk out of the U.N. chamber during his speeches, in protest.

5 Self Esteem "Quick Fixes" | Care2 Healthy Living

By Coach Shari, DivineCaroline

The other day, I came across an article that promised to give women instant confidence and self-esteem in 4 easy steps. Now don?t get me wrong? I highly support all measures to improve self-esteem. However, I?m just a bit skeptical that you can see results in a few hours of time.

The truth is that it takes a lifetime to build self-esteem. You can?t build confidence and self-esteem by listening to a speaker or reading an article about self-esteem. If only it was that easy! Confidence and self-esteem are developed by the consistent actions and behaviors of an individual over a period of time.

So what can you do if you?re struggling with confidence?

Get to know YOU better. There?s no way around this one; the key to building self-esteem is getting to know you and understanding what you need to be happy. Are you in touch with who you really are and what you need in life to be fulfilled? Are you aware of your skills, talents and passions and are they a part of your daily life? I call this ?living your life with genuinity? (my own term). Once you live your life true to you, you will feel comfortable and confident in your own skin.

Set a goal and accomplish it. It seems pretty simple, doesn?t it? You would be surprised at the number of women that go through life without actually defining certain goals they would like to reach. The thing is that every time you are able to focus on a certain task and meet that expectation, you gain a little more confidence. You feel a little more certain that the next goal you work on can also be met. No matter what the age, you never outgrow the need to raise and set the bar to reach another accomplishment.

Incorporate exercise into your life. I?m a pretty firm believer that exercise is key for every woman that wants to feel good about herself. You don?t have to aspire to attain the perfect body? you just need to move on a daily basis. The feeling of becoming physically stronger actually makes you feel mentally stronger. On top of that, the endorphins released during exercise only add to that good feeling. Suddenly, you are walking a little straighter with confidence. You feel good about you!

Face your fears. In order to feel good about you, get outside your comfort zone and really stretch yourself! This is where self-esteem gets a real boost. What?s ironic about this is that you might stay with what?s safe in life because you don?t want to fail; which you feel would lead to you feeling bad about you. However, the opposite is actually true? the more you stay safe, the less confident and self-assured you become. It doesn?t feel good to know you don?t have the guts to challenge yourself. If this sounds familiar, push yourself to take the plunge. The process of facing your fears is a huge step into self-esteem territory.

Find your voice. Take a good look at your life. Are you a pleaser? Do you try to make everyone happy? Do you feel people take advantage of you at work, or in friendships? Then you need to address this immediately and learn how to have healthier physical and emotional boundaries. Until you do this hard work, you will struggle with self-esteem. Your ability to be able to articulate what you need, without worrying what others think, is imperative to your confidence level and self-worth.

This is what I want you to remember: building self-esteem is a process and it doesn?t happen overnight. It comes with having experiences coupled with consistent work to better understand ?YOU?. It happens when you have a vision of what you specifically need to be happy and you then take action to live that life.

    HAPPINESS RUNS: Movie Trailer

A young man named Victor realizes the shortcomings of the utopian ideals on the hippie commune where he was raised. Victor?s mother is funding the commune where the guru Insley hypnotizes and seduces women with a technique he calls "running." Insley manipulates the minds of these women so that they give him their bodies and all their worldly possessions. Victor?s childhood love, Becky, returns to take care of her deathly ill father. Victor, haunted by visions of Becky?s death, is desperate to save her and himself by escaping from the polygamous cult. Preoccupied with Insley?s free love philosophy, the adults of the community overlook the painful reality that the self destructive behavior of their children is most certainly due to early exposure to sex and drugs. To afford an escape, Victor tries to sell weed but is cut out by rivals competing for Becky?s affection. Finally, Victor is torn between getting money from his mother who is entirely under Insley?s influence, dealing with the violent drama of his drug-addled friends, and staying to save Becky as she spins out of control.
